At Seven Mills, we believe that Maths is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality Mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, and to give a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
At Seven Mills, we aim for all children to become fluent, reason mathematically and solve problems.
Fluency in Maths is about developing a sense of number and being able to apply a skill in multiple contexts. Being able to use the same mathematical skill for a range of question types.
Reasoning in Maths is the process of applying logical thinking to a situation, as well as being able to describe (using the relevant mathematical vocabulary) how the solution was brought about.
Problem solving is not just about answering word problems, but is a way of finding how to apply previously learnt knowledge and skills to answer unfamiliar types of questions. It requires a grounding in fluency, number facts, procedures and concepts.
