At Seven Mills, we believe that Maths is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality Mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, and to give a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. We follow the White Rose Scheme of Work to support developing solid foundations through mini steps.
At Seven Mills, we aim for all children to become fluent, reason mathematically and solve problems.
Fluency in Maths is about developing a sense of number and being able to apply a skill in multiple contexts. Being able to use the same mathematical skill for a range of question types.
Reasoning in Maths is the process of applying logical thinking to a situation, as well as being able to describe (using the relevant mathematical vocabulary) how the solution was brought about.
Problem solving is not just about answering word problems, but is a way of finding how to apply previously learnt knowledge and skills to answer unfamiliar types of questions. It requires a grounding in fluency, number facts, procedures and concepts.
